Pat Panter passed away June 23 at age 87. She was married to Lynn Panter for 67 years until he passed away in 2022.
Pat is survived by: daughters Karen (Billy), Linda, and Janet (Jim); grandchildren Jessica (Dusty) and Spencer (Savannah); her entertaining great-grandchildren Caroline, Hoyt, Kennedy, and Lyndon.
She was predeceased by her parents, James and Ernestine, and her siblings Jamie Alday, Sam Payne, Barbara Cannon, and Woods Payne. She was a faithful member of First Centenary United Methodist Church.
She was a graduate of UTC and retired from the finance department of the City of Chattanooga.
Pat was a voracious reader, puzzle worker, movie watcher, Braves fan, Diet Coke drinker, and traveler. She enjoyed lake living in her retirement years and spent many happy hours in the water and on boats. She had many dear friends though her circle had grown smaller over time. She was a long-time volunteer with Girl Scouts, the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and was a supporter of the Soddy Daisy Community Library. She loved being a mom although we think being a great-grandmother was her favorite role. Pat relished a deep conversation and had a true interest in other people's triumphs and trials. She was very aware of social injustice and often prayed to be mindful of the needs of others and have the courage to do something about it. She dealt with several serious health issues during the past 10 years, but she was determined to maintain and share a positive outlook. She and Lynn built a strong, close-knit family who will cherish their many memories with grateful hearts.
Services will be held at 12:00 PM EDT, on Thursday July 2, 2026, at First Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Ave. Chattanooga. Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM prior to the service.
Special thanks to Dr. Jack McCallie, Dr. Brooke Daniel, and the amazing people at Signal Mountain Senior Living and Hospice of Chattanooga.
Memorial donations may be designated for, Chattanooga Food Bank, First Centenary United Methodist Abide, and the Soddy Daisy Community Library.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.

We lost a great lover of books on June 23.
Pat was an avid reader and a supporter of our efforts to form the very first community library in the Chattanooga area. Early in our beginnings, she saw exactly what we were building and simply wanted to be a part of it.
Pat did not shy away from a great discussion and her appetite for literature brought some incredible facts and tidbits to every conversation!
On Thursday, June 2 - while getting ready to attend Pat's funeral service we were called with a 400lb food donation. As we set the food up to donate to the community and prep for free book Friday, we joking laughed and said "This is exactly how we honor Pat - feeding children and inspiring a love a reading."
Pat's reading night-light may be turned off, but her light will forever shine on all she encountered.
Her family has requested donations to be made in her honor to the Soddy-Daisy Community Library.
- Curtis Cecil, President KELCURT Foundation
We are dedicated to preserving the memory and legacy of Patricia Panter. When we build our new site (hopefully by 2037) we will have a dedicated walking path to honor those who have honored our community.
Thank you to everyone for honoring Pat Panter:

Sondra Faye McGann, born April 25th, 1940, to Faye and Thurman Montgomery of Hurricane, MS, passed away on February 22nd at the age of 83. Sondra epitomized strength and love throughout her life and was unwavering in her dedication to her family and friends.
A graduate of The University of Mississippi, Sondra devoted her working years to helping others through the Social Security Department. She retired early to care for her mother, demonstrating the selflessness and compassion that defined her character. Sondra’s intelligence and inquisitiveness fueled her passion for reading. She was well known in local libraries and quickly endeared herself to everyone she met.
Sondra’s resilience and determination were nowhere more evident than in her years as a single mother raising her two sons, Mac and Michael. The stubbornness between these three is matched only by the love they shared. They laughed and argued and lived boldly, growing into an inseparable and formidable family. Sondra played an active role in the lives of her grandchildren which is evident in the many traits she passed on to them all.
Sondra is survived by her sons Mac McGann (Carla) and Michael McGann (Rebecca) both of Chattanooga, TN; her brother, Tranny Montgomery (Zelda) of Hurricane, MS; her grandchildren Alexis Reed (Aaron), Tiffany Garcia (Austin), Natalie McGann, Stowe McGann, and Giulietta Murphy; and many beloved extended family in Hurricane and beyond.
Visitation will be held at Browning Funeral Home, Tuesday, February 27, 2024, from 5 to 7 PM, followed by a service and burial at Sand Spring Church, officiated by Rev. Troy Montgomery, Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 10 AM, where she will join the family that has preceded her. Sondra will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were touched by her remarkable character. She leaves behind a legacy of spiritedness, curiosity, willful determination, laughter, and love.
Donations can be made in her honor to the libraries where she is still remembered, either directly or through her family:
Soddy-Daisy Community Library (9619 Dayton Pike Suite C, Soddy-Daisy TN 37379)
Clyde W. Roddy Library (371 1st Ave, Dayton TN 37321)
Sondra was a voracious reader and a ball of energy. Every time she came into our library, she brought bakery items to our volunteers and checked out book after book. She seemed to love everyone she met and brought a smile to everyone she encountered. Sondra shared her literary enthusiasm with all. But most importantly, she made everyone feel special and important.
When Sondra fell, her presence was sorely missed. We would visit her in the rehab center and share stories. She would tell us about growing up and share stories of her past childhood memories and the love she had for family, friends, and literature.
Ukelear Fusion, our performance ukulele group, stopped by and serenaded her during her recovery.
Sondra will be missed by everyone here at the Soddy-Daisy Community Library.
- Curtis Cecil, President KELCURT Foundation
We are dedicated to preserving the memory and legacy of Sondra McGann. Although it will take about three years to complete, we are currently building an educational memorial pollination garden beside our new community garden. We will be creating a plaque in her honor in our daylily section, as those were her favorite flowers.
